PRISM Museum for Contemporary Art, Oslo, Norway, 2 March-5 August 2011 Drawing works from the museum’s collection are complemented with loans from private and institutional collections in Norway and internationally. The exhibition brings together close to 400 individual works by 37 artists. Drawing, as an expanded field in art practice, harbours techniques and methodologies that both broaden and question notions of what constitutes a drawing today. Post-modern discourses often mention the demise of painting but they remain silent about "the death of drawing." As the oldest and most direct means of image creation, drawing has remained a primary tool for the immediate communication of ideas and its resilience has seen a resurgence of drawing in many recent museum exhibitions. Over the past two decades, drawing has diversified to such a degree that the general term ‘drawing’ can include almost any creative act. Prism focuses on drawing’s autonomy and expansion into areas of art production that are off the wall and out of the frame—site specific, performative and conceptual. It is not a survey of recent drawings but it seeks to function like a glass prism, that separates visible light into its colour spectrum, and reveals some of the constituent parts of contemporary drawing practice. It offers visitors insight to the diversity of contemporary drawing and to its potential as a médium for the art of tomorrow. Emphasis is given to public participation in the making and interpretation of drawing through drawing workshops and seminars. Throughout the exhibition the audience will be invited to submit their own drawings, which will be shown in the Drawing Room.
